At every orchestra rehearsal, every violin lesson, every church recital, I was the juvenile bane of conductors, instructors, and proctors everywhere. I was jealous of my friends who had sensible parents who allowed them to engage in more masculine activities, such as martial arts or baseball. The future of the next six years of my education as a teenager seemed bleak, as my violin instructor had, through my mother, reached her arm into my schedule and branded it with period 2 Orchestra. As I shuffled in on the first day, however, I noticed something different about the room. For the first time, I had friends who were in the same orchestra as I was. As I settled into a chair in the back row with one of my best friends, the conductor explained that our positions would not be determined by one recital alone, but that we were allowed to challenge the player above us for the spot, once a week. Never had I heard of something so flexible, so competitive, so†¦ fun. My recital was abysmal, as was to be expected. Out of all my higher-ranking friends, I was the only one in second violin. Rattled, I determined to challenge my way up until I beat them, or at least until I sat close enough to chat with them in class. But with each player I beat, other, unintended emotions took hold. With my drive to win came the passion to master the notes. As we moved away from idyllic, romantic pieces to wicked, contemporary ones, I found myself actually liking the music, and when we came back around in a circle to Mozart and Tchaikovsky, they weren’t so bad either. I realized that the unthinkable had happened: I liked playing the violin. Playing in that orchestra with my friends was the foothold for reaching greater heights. When I entered high school, I entered the College of the Canyons’ Philharmonics, where I performed with the LA Philharmonics at the Disney Hall. Though I still preferred to play in orchestras, I advanced through the Certificate of Merits test and attended competitions. Through the various stages of my walk, I became acquainted with Beethoven and Viotti. I lamented that I would never hear the end of Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, and understood why Schumann could only be calmed by his own music. The echoes of these sensational composers handed me a staff upon which I could harmonize passion with inspiration, and perseverance with purpose. Playing the violin, by myself, with companions, and with people unfamiliar, has made up a large part of my identity. Through the years, I have tuned my violin with experience and practice, and it in turn has tempered me by teaching me more drive and discipline than martial arts could ever hope to. The instrument looks intensely different from how I saw it years ago: the once meek and feminine-looking scroll has transformed into the prow that heads my resolve, and the bars that once bored me to sleep now stoke the furnace in my chest. But the format is easy to pick up, and there are very practical reasons why reporters have followed this format for decades. Inverted Pyramid in News The inverted pyramid is the model for news writing. It simply means that the heaviest or most important information should be at the top – the beginning – of your story, and the least important information should go at the bottom. And as you move from top to bottom, the information presented should gradually become less important. In the age of internet news, many online news outlets have tweaked this format to align with search engines. But the basic premise remains the same: Get the most important information at the top of the news story. How to Write with the Inverted Pyramid Let’s say you’re writing a story about a fire in which two people are killed and their house is destroyed. In your reporting, you’ve gathered a lot of details including the victims’ names, the address of their home, what time the blaze broke out, and possibly what officials believe may have caused the fire. Obviously, the most important information is the fact that two people died in the fire. That’s what you want at the top of your story. Other details – the names of the deceased, the address of their home, when the fire occurred – should certainly be included. But they can be placed lower down in the story, not at the very top. And the least important information - things like what the weather was like at the time, or the color of the home - should be at the very bottom of the story (if included at all). Story Follows The Lede The other important aspect of structuring a news article is making sure the story follows logically from the lede (this is a deliberate misspelling of lead, which prevented confusion among typesetters in the early days of newspapers). So if the lede of your story focuses on the fact that two people were killed in the house fire, the paragraphs that immediately follow the lede should elaborate on that fact. You wouldnt want the second or third paragraph of the story to discuss the weather at the time of the fire, for example. Details such as the peoples names, their ages and how long they had lived in the home would all be important to include immediately following the lede sentence. History of the Inverted Pyramid The inverted pyramid format turns traditional storytelling on its head. In a short story or novel, the most important moment – the climax - typically comes about two-thirds of the way through, closer to the end. But in news writing, the most important moment is right at the start of the lede. The inverted pyramid format was developed during the Civil War. Newspaper correspondents covering that war’s great battles relied on telegraph machines to transmit their stories back to their newspapers’ offices. But often saboteurs would cut the telegraph lines, so reporters learned to transmit the most important information – General Lee defeated at Gettysburg, for instance – at the very start of the transmission to make sure it got through successfully. While a great number of people still lack the basic necessities of life, some live their lives in enviable luxury. Extravagance and squalor exist side by side. While a few are privileged with the power of choice, many do not have any control over their deprived condition and work and live in circumstances unworthy of a human being. The Industrial Revolution indeed has ushered in the machine age, but it has brought about a dehumanized mass- work culture all over Europe. In all ages men of vision understand the pitfalls of fast change.... The history of mankind is marred by the gruesome tales of atrocities committed by some on a few by various forms of subjugation. The so-called golden ages of mankind, strewn with wonders of mammoth size and architectonic finesse, the marvels in stone and bronze and the sprawling pleasure palaces are soaked in blood, sweat and tears of millions of slaves. The ships that plied the ocean bed were powered by rhythmic pulling of the oars of countless number of chained galley slaves that perished in unknown seas. The auction centers of Africa where men and women were exhibited and bid by the ruthless slave traders and shipped to various destination in Europe and America to man the plantations there, produce in us, the reverberation of the question which Cain asked God: Am I my brother's keeper (The New Revised Standard Version, Gen.4.9).Though the visible signs of slavery through collective bargain, education, legislation and the salutary influences of teachings of religions have been miti gated to a large extent still there is a tendency in man to dominate others. Many veiled forms of slavery are present in many parts of the world. This is a matter of genuine concern. While man enlarges his power everywhere, he does not always succeed in subjecting it to his ultimate welfare. The concept that destiny of an individual is intrinsically and inseparably connected with the destiny of entire humanity eludes many people.
